Lewiston, a city in Nez Perce County was named after the explorer Meriwether Lewis. Lewiston is located at the junction of the Snake and Clearwater rivers. Lewiston is the furthest inland port for Snake River drainage.
Lewiston has vast variations in climate within short distances. Winter temperatures are low in the prairies regions with almost double that is recorded in the valley and at the airport location. Summers are hot and dry with temperatures reaching to almost 100 degrees for at least 10 days in a year. Months of December, January and February experiences snowfall. Precipitation normally amounts to about 13 inches annually, which is rather evenly distributed through the year except for the months of July and August
The growing season of approximately 220 days makes conditions favorable for the growing of many types of fruits, vegetables, and berries.

Recreation
Hiking, picnicking, camping, and berry picking are easily accessible. Just 3 miles south of Lewiston is Hells Gate State Park. Equipped with camping facilities, a beach, a marina, and hiking and horseback riding trails, the park is a favorite of summer visitors. A variety of outfitters and jetboat and cruise ship operators provide access to the area's waters. Barges laden with grain or wood products can be found on the rivers slowly making the 465-mile journey west to ocean waters.
